Does the Bible have a place in the mind and life of the contemporary Christian? This is the question John Stott seeks to answer in The Contemporary Christian. Originally published as a book, it has been divided into new and updated volumes by InterVarsity Press. If you have not already, I encourage you to check out my reviews of the previous two books in this five-part series. I give some background on the author and this specific collection. For this review, I would like to jump right in.Continuing in and Responding to the WordThe first chapter is a call to continue in the Word specifically because we are in the last days. Stott sees the preacher as a herald and town crier in the market-place. He warns against those who will not put up with sound doctrine and cautions against the condition of having “itching ears.”Next, Stott shows how worship is a response to the revelation fo God’s name; faith to the revelation of his character and covenant; obedience to the revelation of his will and commandments; and hope to the revelation of his purpose and promises. It is a beautiful chapter and the perfect setup for what comes next.Transposing and Expounding the WordChapter three is the crowning achievement of the entire series up to this point. Here he expounds on our own cultural imprisonment, the Bible’s cultural conditioning, and the need to transpose the Word. Interestingly, he tackles the topic of women remaining silent versus teaching in the church. I won’t spoil his conclusion here; you will have to read it on your own to find out his conclusion. The book ends with Stott explaining his definition of preaching: to open up the inspired text with such faithfulness and sensitivity that God’s voice is heard and God’s people obey him. He makes a compelling argument for his stance and his passion comes through.God’s Word for TodayIt is clear that this is where Stott would place it all on the line - with the trustworthiness and truth of the Word of God. This was a compelling and quick read. I am ignited to read more, study more, and preach more. But most importantly, I am eager to see more of Christ.I was provided a complimentary copy of The Bible: God’s Word for Today in exchange for an honest review.
